Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program-ADAP
ADAP is required for all teen drivers who seek to have their Class D Driver’s Permit before the age of 17.
The new Georgia State approved program covers topic including TADRA (Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act). Students learn the laws regarding driving teenage driving. A study conducted by Emory University researchers found “that in the 5 ½ years following the enactment of TADRA the rate of fatal crashes in Georgia involving teenage drivers’ 16 years of age was 36.8% less than in the 5 ½ years immediately prior to its enactment.” Moreover, researchers found that speed-related fatal crashes involving teenage drivers 16 years of age declined by nearly 50% and alcohol-related crashes involving teenage drivers 16 years of age declined by 62%.”*
Other topics include Traffic Laws and Safe Driving, Alcohol and the effects, and Drug Awareness and the effects of drugs on the body and driving.
New London School of Driving also has the teen to wear Drunk Busters goggles which simulate the impairment you have if you have been drinking. The students are asked to walk a strait line, touch their nose and catch a ball. Everyone is laughing at each other as they sway and drop the ball, but they are soon reminded the dangers of trying to operate a motor vehicle while impaired.
When possible we have a parent or another person who has been impacted by someone driving drunk speak to the class. Along with videos we show the teens realize driving comes with a big responsibility.
“The statistics show in 2009 28% of teen reported riding in a car or other vehicle during the past 30 days driven by someone who has been drinking alcohol.” **
